1. WE HONOR MARY AS GOD HAS HONORED HER
We honor Mary because doing so directly glorifies the God who first exalted her from the very beginning. As Scripture proclaims in the Magnificat, “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me – holy is his name” (Luke 1:46-49).
This divine honoring is woven throughout salvation history through extraordinary privileges: her Immaculate Conception as a woman “full of grace” (Luke 1:30) and “clothed with the sun” (Revelation 12:1); her Divine Maternity to “give birth to the Son of the Most High” (Luke 1:31-32); her Assumption where she was “given the two wings of a great eagle” to fly to a “place prepared for her by God” (Revelation 12:6, 14); and her heavenly Coronation “with a crown of twelve stars on her head” (Revelation 12:1).
Ultimately, recognizing Mary’s unique role is an act of worship that points directly back to the Creator, echoing the celestial praise: “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being” (Revelation 4:11).
2. WE HONOR MARY AS QUEEN OF HEAVEN
We honor the Virgin Mary as the Queen of Heaven, fulfilling the prophetic vision of “a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon beneath her feet, and a crown of twelve stars on her head” (Revelation 12:1). Just as we are instructed to show proper respect to earthly rulers (1 Peter 2:17), we offer profound reverence to Mary, crowned in God’s eternal Kingdom. The twelve stars symbolize the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles, uniting the foundations of God’s chosen people and the Church. Furthermore, her being “clothed with the sun” reflects the radiant glory of God upon her, while the moon beneath her feet signifies her role in bearing Jesus Christ, the true Light of the world that darkness cannot overcome (John 1:5).
3. WE HONOR MARY AS ANTITHESIS OF EVE
Honoring Mary as the ultimate antithesis of Eve highlights her pivotal role in salvation history, where her radical obedience directly countered the first woman’s transgression. While Eve succumbed to the serpent’s deception and shared the forbidden fruit (Genesis 3:1-7), bringing condemnation to humanity, Mary chose absolute surrender to the divine will. Declaring, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word” (Luke 1:38), her faithful “yes” untied the ancient knot of human disobedience. Through the Holy Spirit, she conceived and brought forth Jesus Christ, the “living bread which came down from heaven” who offers eternal life to all (John 6:51). Therefore, recognizing Mary is not merely tradition, but a profound expression of gratitude for the woman who selflessly surrendered her life to carry the Savior of the world in her holy womb.
4. WE HONOR MARY AS SPOUSE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Acknowledging the universal tradition of honoring earthly queens, first ladies and spouses of dignitaries, we elevate that reverence to a global Christian context by honoring Mary as the Spouse of the Holy Spirit. This profound divine relationship is rooted in sacred Scripture, where “the angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the child to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God’” (Luke 1:35). If human society willingly gives high esteem to the wives of earthly leaders, the global Church holds an even greater obligation to honor Mary, who uniquely cooperated with the manifestation of God to conceive and bring forth the Word Incarnate for the redemption of the world.
5. WE HONOR MARY AS MOTHER OF OUR LORD
Honoring Mary as the Mother of Our Lord bridges a profound scriptural truth with the daily reality of believers worldwide. The Bible records that “when Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?’” (Luke 1:41-43). Driven by godly love and compassion for humanity, the Virgin Mary remains ever ready to intercede for sinners and those in need. By acknowledging and honoring her identity as the Mother of our Lord Jesus, you open your heart to her sympathy during your moments of greatest trial.
At the Wedding in Cana, the hosts invited her without fully knowing her capability, yet through her direct intercession with her Son, she delivered the unexpected by turning ordinary water into extraordinary wine (John 2:7-9). Today, from her divine office as the Mother of our Lord and Mother of the Church, Mary continues to extend this same favor to everyone who invites her into their life events through prayer. Truly, recognizing her office serves as a spiritual shortcut to the throne of Jesus, and when you meet Jesus, you meet the Father, for Christ declared, “he is in the Father and the Father is in him” (John 14:9-10).
6. WE HONOR MARY AS MOTHER OF CHRISTIANS
We honor Mary as the mother of all believers. As Scripture reveals, the dragon “became enraged at the woman and went off to wage war on the rest of her offspring, those who keep God’s commandments and bear witness to Jesus” (Revelation 12:17). Because all who are baptized into the Body of Christ become His brethren, they are intimately connected to His mother. Consequently, any claim to embrace Christ while ignoring or despising the Virgin Mary creates a profound contradiction; true faith recognizes and cherishes Mary as our spiritual Mother.
7. WE HONOR MARY AS MOTHER OF APOSTLES
Reflecting her sacred role as the “Mother of the Apostles,” we honor the Blessed Virgin Mary through Christ’s profound decree on the cross: “When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, behold, your son.’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Behold, your mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his home” (John 19:26-27). This divine entrustment extends globally to all modern disciples, apostles, pastors, and leaders, calling them to welcome Mary into their ministries and hearts as a spiritual mother. To reject her maternal role is to refuse a vital gift of grace extended by Christ to His chosen servants. Just as the early Church united in the Upper Room where the Apostles “all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus” (Acts 1:14), Christian leaders today are invited to embrace her presence as they seek the power and unity of the Holy Spirit.
8. WE HONOR MARY AS MENTOR OF BELIEVERS
Mary, the Mother of God, serves as the ultimate mentor of Christians, continually guiding the faithful to her Son with her timeless plea: “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5). Her maternal desire is that all humanity returns to God through the redemptive grace of Christ, a call echoed in her modern apparitions, such as the Message of Fatima, which urges prayer, penance, and sacrifice for world peace and the conversion of sinners. By honoring Mary and meditating on the Mysteries of the Holy Rosary, believers are led by the Holy Spirit to uncover the profound depths of Christ’s salvation, obtaining the graces, strength, and provisions needed to fulfill their divine vocations for His glory.
9. WE HONOR MARY IN OBEDIENCE TO GOD

By honoring Mary, Christians globally fulfill the Fourth Commandment to “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you” (Exodus 20:12), thereby offering ultimate glory to God, who declares that “to obey is better than sacrifice” (1 Samuel 15:22). This act of obedience secures God’s divine approval even before Mary begins her intercession on our behalf. Ultimately, our perpetual honor of Mary provides us with her spiritual mentorship, which guides believers in maintaining and preserving their blessings within the holy kingdom of God.
10. WE HONOR MARY, NOT WORSHIP HER
Christians honor Mary but worship God alone, as Jesus commanded: “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only’” (Matthew 4:10). While worship is the unique adoration reserved strictly for the Holy Trinity – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as the one Creator of all things—honoring Mary means highly esteeming her unique spiritual office and role in the Church. Believers express this honor by meditating on the mysteries of the Holy Rosary, a deeply scriptural devotion where every decade reflects on the Word of God incarnate in Jesus Christ. Because the Rosary perfectly summarizes Christ’s life, ministry, and the universal Christian vocation of imitating Him, praying it alongside Mary helps faithful believers assimilate the Word of God and secure their everlasting establishment in His Kingdom.
11. MARY REWARDS OUR HONOR WITHOUT MEASURE
Honoring Mary opens the door to her powerful intercession and divine mentorship, as beautifully demonstrated during the wedding at Cana when she noticed the shortage and told Jesus, “They have no wine,” leading to His first miracle where “he revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him” (John 2:3, 11). Just as Mary received the Word of God and nurtured the Incarnation through the Holy Spirit, she also receives our prayers, refines them into their proper form, and nurtures them with the Holy Spirit to submit to God through Jesus Christ. Because the Incarnation of the Word through Mary perfectly fulfilled its earthly mission, we can trust that our prayers submitted through her will successfully reach heaven and be answered according to God’s perfect timing.
12. WE HONOR MARY TO HONOR OUR MOTHERS
By looking to the biblical example of Jesus Christ, who “went back with them to Nazareth, where he was obedient to them” while His mother “treasured all these things in her heart” (Luke 2:51), we uncover a profound blueprint for honoring our own parents. Jesus perfectly modeled the divine command outlined in Ephesians 6:1-3, which reminds us: “Children, it is your Christian duty to obey your parents, for this is the right thing to do. Respect your father and mother is the first commandment that has a promise added: so that all may go well with you, and you may live a long time in the land.”
Following Christ’s lead, we offer heartfelt gratitude to God through Mary – the ultimate maternal role model—for the invaluable lives of our earthly mothers. Through the devotion of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, we proudly pay tribute to generations of mothers across the globe—past, present, and future – while echoing the beautiful sentiments of the music icon Prince Nico Mbarga, whose legendary, timeless anthem “Sweet Mother” continues to celebrate the universal beauty of motherhood. May God, in his mercy, grant his soul eternal rest; Amen.
