1. The Offspring of Mary
A descendant is traditionally defined as a person related to an ancestor from an earlier generation through a direct, downward bloodline. In the economy of salvation, this concept transitions from the physical to the spiritual. The universal Church – Scripturally identified as the “body of Christ” (Ephesians 1:22-23) – constitutes the spiritual offspring of Mary.
Through the Sacrament of Baptism, Christians are spiritually reborn in Jesus Christ. Because Jesus is the primary physical offspring of Mary, anyone reborn in Christ is integrated into His family, automatically becoming an offspring of Mary.
The Dogmatic Constitution on the Church (Lumen Gentium) confirms this supernatural reality, noting that Mary is “the mother of the members of Christ… having cooperated by charity that the faithful might be born in the Church, who are members of that Head” (Lumen Gentium, No. 53).
This maternal dynamic is anchored in two pivotal scriptural truths:
- The “Rest” of the Offspring: Revelation 12:17 highlights “the rest of her offspring,” indicating a lineage of children born spiritually after Jesus Christ, the first-born Son (Luke 2:7).
- Christ’s Direct Commission: From the Cross, Jesus explicitly finalized this relationship, telling the Apostle John, and by extension all disciples, “She is your mother” (John 19:26-27).
The Genealogy of Mary’s Offspring
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) highlights that the Church, by receiving the word of God in faith, “becomes herself a mother. By preaching and Baptism she brings forth sons, who are conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of God” (CCC 507). This spiritual lineage unfolds through three operations:
- The Head (The Nativity): Holy Spirit + Word → Mary = Jesus Christ (The Founder of the Church)
- The Proclaimers (The Pentecost): Holy Spirit + Word → Mary = The Apostles (The Proclaimers of the Church)
- The Body (The Font): Holy Spirit + Word → Mary = Every Christian (The Members of the Church reborn of the Holy Spirit and Fire)
2. The Arrays of Battle
A “battle array” refers to the ordered, strategic formation of troops prepared for immediate combat to maximize tactical effectiveness. For the Church, this does not manifest as a physical conflict. As Ephesians 6:12 states, “we are not fighting against human beings,” but rather against spiritual forces. Since the days of John the Baptist, the Kingdom of God has suffered violence (Matthew 11:12).
The Three Fronts of Christian Warfare
- Inner War: The personal battle fought against internal weaknesses, vices, and immediate temptations.
- Internal War: Conflicts, divisions, and theological heresies occurring within and between Christian communities.
- External War: The macro-level struggle against Satanic forces (spiritual) and the corrupted systems of the world (social).
The Four Biblical and Spiritual Battles
The ongoing conflict between the Kingdom of God and the forces of darkness spans four major tactical phases outlined in salvation history:
I. The First Battle: The Conception and Birth of the Messiah
When the Virgin Mary – the Queen of Heaven – was about to give birth, the Dragon (the Devil) waged war against the Kingdom of God (Revelation 12:1-4). Knowing the Messiah was destined to conquer him, the Dragon rallied one-third of the heavenly hosts to destroy the Child. The Dragon lost this battle; God carried His Son to safety immediately after birth (Revelation 12:3-5). This cosmic battle manifested on earth through Herod’s slaughter of the innocents, the flight into Egypt with the baby Jesus (Matthew 2), and ultimately Christ’s Passion, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension (Matthew 26-28).
II. The Second Battle: The War in Heaven
Following his initial failure, the Dragon and his fallen angels launched an assault on the heavenly powers. St. Michael the Archangel led the loyal angels of God to defeat the Dragon, casting the demonic host out of Heaven and down to the earth (Revelation 12:7-9).
III. The Third Battle: The Assault on the Woman
Confined to the earth, the Dragon directed his fury toward the Virgin Mary. However, she was preserved from death and corruption, lifted on the wings of the Holy Spirit into heaven beyond the Dragon’s reach (Revelation 12:13-14).
This victory is the core of the mystery of the Assumption, formalized in Church teaching: “The Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen of the universe” (CCC 974 / Lumen Gentium 59).
IV. The Fourth Battle: The War on the Church
Having lost all three previous engagements, the Dragon refused to surrender. He pivoted to wage a fourth, ongoing war against the remaining offspring of Mary – those who keep God’s commandments and hold fast to the testimony of Jesus (Revelation 12:17-18).
The Church acknowledges this relentless attack in Lumen Gentium 62, stating that even in heaven, Mary’s care never ceases for “the brethren of her Son who still wander through this world, in the midst of dangers and difficulties, until they are led to the happiness of their heavenly home”. This current spiritual warfare generates all the adversities, systemic injustices, moral corruption, and division visible within the world today.

3. Mary as the Spiritual Catapult
Confronted with this final draconic warfare, Christians must rise with the courageous spirit of King David. To defeat the spiritual Goliath, believers must utilize the spiritual weapons provided by God’s providence (1 Samuel 17:40, 48-50).
The biblical account of David defeating Goliath functions as an exact allegorical blueprint for modern spiritual warfare:
- Goliath is the spiritual archetype of the Dragon.
- The Stream represents the living waters of the Holy Spirit.
- The Five Smooth Stones represent the Word of God.
- The Shepherd’s Bag represents the Holy Bible, which houses the Word.
- The Sling (Catapult) represents the Virgin Mary.
Through Mary, the Word of God was made flesh in Jesus Christ (John 1:14) to strip the Devil of his power (Colossians 2:15). Utilizing the Immaculate Heart of Mary as a spiritual catapult is an expression of divine wisdom (Isaiah 55:8-9). It is the precise pathway God chose to introduce the Savior into the world to break satanic oppression (Luke 1:30-31).
Ultimate Victory through the Incarnate Word
The ultimate victory was sealed on the Cross, where Jesus Christ carried human sin, canceled the record of spiritual debt, and made a public spectacle of all demonic powers:
“God forgave us all our sins; he canceled the unfavorable record of our debts with its binding rules and did away with it completely by nailing it to the cross. And on that cross Christ stripped the spiritual rulers and authorities of their power; he made a public spectacle of them by leading them as captives in his victory procession.” (Colossians 2:13-15).
Believers achieve victory in the fourth battle by wielding the Incarnate Word through the same maternal instrument God used to bring Him into the world – the Virgin Mary.

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
O Eternal Father, Creator of the Heavenly Hosts and Commander of the Armies of Light, I stand before You today clothed in the grace of my Baptism. I acknowledge that I am a child of God, a member of the Mystical Body of Christ, and a spiritual offspring of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
As the Dragon wages his fourth and final war against the Church, I refuse to shrink back in fear. Armed with the Holy Spirit and sheltered under the mantle of my Heavenly Mother, I advance onto the spiritual battlefield.
Through the Immaculate Heart of Mary – the Divine Catapult – I launch the Five Smooth Stones of Your Holy Word against the forces of darkness:
[1] I LAUNCH THE STONE OF COMMANDMENT:
By the power of 1 Corinthians 10:13, I strike down every temptation of the flesh, every hidden vice, and every trap of the enemy designed to compromise my purity and obedience. Deliver me from sin, O Lord!
[2] I LAUNCH THE STONE OF TRUTH:
By the power of John 17:17, I shatter the lies, deceptions, and false ideologies of this present age. I bind every spirit of anxiety, illusion, and confusion trying to pierce my mind. Guard my thoughts in Your absolute Truth!
[3] I LAUNCH THE STONE OF HUMILITY:
By the power of James 4:6, I crush the skull of demonic pride, vanity, and self-reliance within my soul. Teach me to pray Mary’s “Fiat” – Thy will be done, not mine. Grant me the strength of a humble heart!
[4] I LAUNCH THE STONE OF UNITY:
By the power of 1 Corinthians 1:10, I break the arrows of division, gossip, malice, and discord targeting my family, my relationships, and my parish. Holy Spirit, bind us together in the perfect bond of charity!
[5] I LAUNCH THE STONE OF VICTORY:
By the power of Revelation 12:11, I claim the ultimate triumph of Jesus Christ on the Cross. I trample over macro-level systemic evil, societal corruption, and the structural malice of the Dragon – as the victory is already won by the Blood of the Lamb!
Lord Jesus, You canceled the record of my debts and took captive the principalities of hell. Keep me faithful to Your commandments until my final breath. May St. Michael the Archangel, the Queen of Angels, and the entire Heavenly Court fight alongside me this day.
I ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns, with the Father and the Holy Spirit – one God – forever and ever. Amen.
