“And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer.” (Revelation 12:7–8)
Angels are pure, spiritual beings created by God. By nature, they are incorporeal spirits; by office, they are servants and messengers of the Most High (Hebrews 1:14). Operating on a higher order of creation than human beings, they possess intellect, free will, and immortality, yet they remain distinct from the saints – who are human beings made perfect by God in glory (Hebrews 12:23).

- HONORING THE HEAVENLY HOSTS
The Feast of Saint Michael, historically known as Michaelmas, dates back to the fifth century following the consecration of a basilica in his honor on the Via Salaria near Rome. Celebrated annually on September 29, this solemnity honors the three archangels venerated across the global Christian tradition: Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael.
- Michael (“Who is like God?”): The premier defender of heaven who fought against Satan and his fallen angels, shielding the friends of God and protecting humanity from the snares of the devil.
- Gabriel (“Strength of God”): The celestial messenger who announced the birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah and the Incarnation of Jesus Christ to the Virgin Mary (Luke 1:11-38). He stands as the patron saint of preachers, communication workers, and evangelists.
- Raphael (“Medicine of God”): The divine healer who guided Tobias on his journey, restored the sight of elder Tobit, and delivered Sarah from the demon Asmodeus (Book of Tobit). He serves as the patron of healing, travelers, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
This sacred season is more than a historical commemoration; it is a prophetic window for believers to understand spiritual warfare, claim divine protection, and unlock the keys to spiritual promotion.
2. Michael at Work: His Four Divine Functions
According to Sacred Scripture, Archangel Michael fulfills four primary duties in the economy of salvation:
- The Cosmic Combatant: To wage war against Satan and the ancient dragon (Revelation 12:7-9).
- The Guardian of Souls: To escort the souls of the faithful to heaven at the hour of death (Jude 1:9).
- The Champion of the Church: To defend God’s people and shield the Church against the accusations and assaults of the devil (Daniel 10:13, 21; Zechariah 3:1-7).
- The Herald of Judgment: To awaken humanity at the end of time to face the final judgment (Daniel 12:1).

3. The Cosmic War: Michael’s Conquest over Satan
The authority of Archangel Michael is rooted in his absolute alignment with the sovereignty of God. The Book of Revelation pulls back the veil on the cosmic battlefield, showing that Satan’s defeat was executed through divine authority and unwavering faith. Michael did not fight in his own name, but in the power and authority of the Most High.
“And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer.” (Revelation 12:7–8)
Today, Saint Michael is invoked globally for protection against both spiritual and physical dangers. He is the patron saint of soldiers, police officers, first responders, mariners, and those operating in high-risk professions. Remarkably, he is also recognized as a defender of Christ in the Holy Eucharist. This spiritual reality was mirrored in a recent fire outbreak in the Diocese of Mamfe, Cameroon, where an entire church building was reduced to ashes, yet the Blessed Sacrament remained completely untouched and pristine within the tabernacle.
To receive the power to conquer the adversities of this world, believers must study Michael’s stance. His very name asks a defining question: Who is like God? By anchoring our identity in the supremacy of God, the enemy loses all leverage over our lives.
4. Satan’s War Strategy: The Battle for the Heart
Satan remains relentlessly at work on earth, targeting the baptized (Revelation 12:9, 12). His whispers to modern society mirror his ancient pitch to Christ: “All these things I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” However, through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, believers are fully equipped to overcome the tempter (1 John 4:4).
God permitted the temptation of Jesus to provide believers with a spiritual blueprint: we must aggressively protect the throne of our hearts so Christ may dwell there through faith (Ephesians 3:17). If we abdicate that throne to the enemy, we jeopardize our heavenly citizenship (Philippians 3:20).
Satan rarely conquers through force; he conquers through compromise. He targets our deepest human desires – wealth, power, validation, and relationships – using them as bait. The moment we prioritize these desires over God’s law; we inadvertently allow the enemy to take dominion. When these earthly metrics threaten to corrupt your conscience, you must boldly declare: “I will not worship you – money, power, or flesh – for you are not my God!”

5. Imitating the Virtues of Saint Michael
Saint Michael is exalted because he successfully defended the sovereign throne and supremacy of God. He stood firm against Lucifer, who arrogantly coveted God’s glory and drew a third of the stars from heaven (Revelation 12:4).
For modern Christians, celebrating Michaelmas is a call to replicate Michael’s fierce loyalty, absolute obedience, and total submission to the one true God. His defining virtues are an unyielding commitment to justice and an unwavering courage to defend the Truth. Because he chose humility and divine alignment over rebellion, God promoted him to the absolute summit of the angelic hierarchy.
To truly honor Saint Michael, we must consciously reject Satan and the deceptive offers he uses to usurp God’s throne within our hearts. When the devil tempted Christ in the wilderness to seize control of His mission, Jesus weaponized scriptural Truth to conquer him (Matthew 4:1-11). Upon Satan’s defeat, the scriptures note that angels arrived to minister to the Lord (Matthew 4:11).
6. Our Spiritual Self-Examination
To realign your heart with Saint Michael’s battle cry, every believer, pastor, and evangelist must regularly ask these diagnostic questions:
- Am I working for God’s kingdom, or am I building my own empire?
- Do I proclaim the unadulterated Word of God, or am I preaching my own opinions?
- Am I seeking the applause of men, or the ultimate glory of God?
Answering these questions honestly allows the Holy Spirit to adjust our thoughts and desires, ensuring our lives echo the cry: “Who is like God?”

7. The Blueprint for Absolute Victory
The definitive path to spiritual victory requires completely evicting the enemy from the center of your life through sincere confession, deep repentance, and persistent prayer.
You cannot successfully fight the devil while simultaneously accepting his paychecks. Satan baits us with sinful compromises, only to use those exact sins to accuse us before the Father (Revelation 12:10; Zechariah 3:1). Unconfessed sin ruptures our fellowship with God (Romans 3:23), stripping our prayers of spiritual authority and leaving us vulnerable. Repentance closes these spiritual legal loopholes.
8. Overcoming the Accuser by the Blood and the Word
The conquest of the enemy is not achieved through human intellect or physical strength, but through spiritual weapons. Archangel Michael’s victory in heaven sets the blueprint for the believer’s victory on earth. The total defeat of the adversary requires a dual reliance on the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the bold declaration of our faith.
“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.” (Revelation 12:11)
When you apply the blood of Christ to your life and speak the truth of God’s Word over your circumstances, you activate the same heavenly backing that cast down the accuser.

9. THe Secret to Divine Promotion: Humility and Submission
The name Michael is a perpetual call to recognition, loyalty, and divine submission. When you recognize God’s absolute sovereignty and surrender your life to Him, your body becomes a living temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
True promotion comes from total surrender. When you empty yourself, God establishes His throne within you, elevates you into your divine destiny, and manifests His supernatural power through your weakness. As the Apostle Paul reminds us, God intentionally chooses the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and the weak things of the world to shame the things which are mighty (1 Corinthians 1:27).
The ultimate secret to receiving power and promotion from God lies in total submission to divine authority. Archangel Michael exemplifies supreme authority precisely because he practices supreme humility. Even when contending with the devil, Michael did not rely on arrogant commands; he deferred completely to the judgment of God.
“Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, ‘The Lord rebuke you!’” (Jude 1:9)
True promotion in the Kingdom of God does not come from self-exaltation or earthly striving. It is a direct result of humbling oneself before the Father. As you yield your will to Him, He dispatches His heavenly hosts to fight your battles and elevate you in due season.
“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” (James 4:10)
10. LET US PRAY
Heavenly Father, may the veneration of Saint Michael the Archangel, through our earnest prayers and the deliberate imitation of his virtues, bring us into complete and total victory over the enemy of our salvation. Guard our hearts, protect our families, and keep us securely anchored in the triumph of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
